World Down Syndrome Day

posted Feb 6, 2011 6:28 PM by James Mertz

Join us Sunday, March 20th from noon until 6pm at the Northwest Arkansas Mall in Fayetteville to celebrate World Down Syndrome Day. World Down Syndrome Day is held annually on March 21st to signify the uniqueness of Down syndrome in the triplication (trisomy) of the 21st chromosome. Due to the 21st being a Monday this year, we are going to celebrate a day early on Sunday the 20th. We will have an informational table set up for our group along with other related organizations. We are in need of volunteers for our table. If you are interested in volunteering at our table, please let me know what time you would be able to work. We will be setting up at 11am and will be there until 6pm.

Happy New Year

posted Jan 16, 2011 5:22 PM by James Mertz

Hello friends!

Hope 2011 is off to a good start.  We have made a lot of changes to Down Syndrome Connection of NWA support group (DSCNWA) that we are proud of and think you will be too!
First of all we'd like to thank everyone for coming to our DSCNWA Christmas Party at Magnolia Gardens in Springdale.  As always, the staff was friendly and the venue was beautifully decorated and very inviting to our families.  We had a huge turnout...over 225 people - WOW!  Lots of good food, mingling and making new friends.
Next I want to inform everyone that we have changed our support group meeting location to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, located at 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale.  It's on the corner of 48th Street and Watkins Ave. (Co. rd. 889).  It's the church with the 3 windmills on east side of bypass, across the street from Miracle League Park.
Since it's located directly off the by-pass, we hope the new meeting location will be more accessible to all our families.  Another great thing we have to offer is...FREE childcare during support group meetings!  You must RSVP (name and age) by Friday the 14th to Candia to insure we have enough staff to supervise our kiddos.  Hope to see you there!
Our next DSCNWA support group meeting will be held at our new meeting location on Tuesday January 18th at 6:00-7:30pm.  Everyone is welcome!  Our guest speaker will be:

HORSES FOR HEALING
The mission of Horses for Healing is to provide therapeutic horseback riding programs for physically, emotionally and/or mentally challenged residents of Northwest Arkansas, regardless of their ability to pay. Our first priority is serving children with special needs. That focus may expand as circumstances arise and resources allow.
http://www.horsesforhealingnwa.com/

Horses for Healing is a nonprofit, therapeutic riding center that helps children with special needs across Northwest Arkansas grow mentally, physically and emotionally. The amazing bond formed between the child and horse is a true friendship that encourages incredible personal growth. Sitting on top of the horse, the children develop confidence in themselves and feel freedom from the different challenges they face.
